One way counselors can advocate for students is to help parents grow in sound parenting skills. This session introduces counselors to the STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) program, an Adlerian-based curriculum for learning parenting skills which, in a nutshell, is based on the belief, you cannot change your child, but you can change your relationship with your child and thus influence positive choices and behavior. Using the STEP textbook for adolescents and teenagers as a reference point, this workshop provides two models of establishing a parenting skills program at your school as well as pointing out some of its benefits, such as creating a common vocabulary for parenting, moving parenting questions away from a college admissions focus, and raising both trust and visibility for your counseling program. Prior knowledge of Adlerian theory (the most research-verified approach to child and adolescent psychology) is not required.

Learn two possible models for program implementation.
