Inquiry-based teaching is one of the fundamental principles of the IB teaching philosophy. It is a pedagogical approach that encourages students to engage with the academic content by posing, investigating and answering questions. The role of the teacher in the inquiry-based classroom is slightly different from that of a teacher in a conventional classroom. Therefore, for some administrators and parents, it could be seen as passive and disengaged with students. IB educators who use an inquiry-based approach provide rich and multiple experiences that provoke students to think and generate questions. Numerous research studies provided strong arguments for choosing inquiry-based teaching over conventional models that emphasize direct instructions. Researchers suggested three levels of inquiry-based teaching based on different levels of student autonomy and directions of a teacher or material. Participants will take part in an educational experiment that aims to compare and contrast different levels of inquiry in terms of their effectiveness in solving an unseen scientific problem.

Session Objectives:

Describe and distinguish three different levels of inquiry based teaching (open, guided and structured inquiry).
Experiment on different types of inquiry and its nature.
